Tom Williams has shared the fantastic new video for his current single ‘It’s Dark Now’, which received its radio premiere last week by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6Music.
When he’s not recording and touring as a musician, Williams teaches guitar and songwriting at five schools in Kent, and he asked some of his pupils at Woodlands Primary School in Tonbridge to star in the video for ‘It’s Dark Now’.
“I’ve taught guitar and songwriting for 8 years,” says Williams. “Getting back from touring at 2/3 in the morning and up again for teaching at 6 can take it out of you, but teaching primary school children can be especially entertaining when they know you’re exhausted! I’ve wanted to combine my two worlds of teaching and making music for a long time, and the idea for the video came about as a natural extension of the new album’s title ‘What Did You Want To Be?’ and the whole notion of exploring your childhood aspirations.
“I love how the video turned out, all filmed in a single day at Woodlands Primary School in Tonbridge. Each pupil had half an hour on camera and were played a variety of music while eating lots of sweets. Some students were rambunctious, some were quiet and thoughtful. Some danced and jumped and shouted and some quietly listened and chewed Haribo. It was such a great day and so rewarding to that combine that side of my life with the other. One 8 year old pupil said to me as he left, “I can’t believe I’m going to be on YouTube, it’s a dream come true!”
‘It’s Dark Now’ is the follow-up to lead single ‘Early Morning Rain’ which was B-listed at 6Music and playlisted at Radio X. Both singles are taken from Williams’ new album ‘What Did You Want To Be?’, which will be released March 29 on Wire Boat Recordings and is available to pre-order. The album was produced by Tim Rice-Oxley (Keane) and recorded at his studio in East Sussex. ‘What Did You Want To Be’ is the follow up to career high ‘All Change’, which placed No.9 on 6Music’s Albums Of The Year in 2017.
Tom Williams is a songwriter’s songwriter. It’s a craft over which he obsesses, and the love of which he passes on with wide-eyed passion to the primary and secondary school pupils to whom he teaches music. His expertise with the form has seen him build up a passionate fanbase over the ten years in which he’s released albums, first as Tom Williams & The Boat, then under his own name.
Did You Want To Be?’ is exactly the album Tom Williams wanted to make. One week, one studio, a brilliant producer, his five-piece live band – Jack Clayton (drums), Jake Mehew (keys), Igor Dall’Avanzi (bass), Ant Vicary (guitar) – and 11 pitch-perfect songs.
Tom recently launched the Tom Williams Podcast, the first two episodes in this regular series are available to listen to with more to follow. Says Tom, “I wanted to expand on the amazing cast of inspirational people who helped in the making of the new album, plus interviews and sessions with fantastic songwriters new and established.”
