Leonie Evans began performing at the age of 5 and has never stopped….Her never ending tour has brought her to the furthest reaches of Britain, Europe, Japan & the USA. What sets Leonie Evans her apart from just a discography and list of tour dates are the countless guest vocals, collaborations, performances in the streets and jazz clubs of New Orleans, London, Bristol, spontaneous jams at parties and festivals and, perhaps most precious of all, the sprawling web of connections growing between Leonie and her ever-expanding family of musical sisters and brothers.
Her output to date has included two exquisite albums of dreamy, jazzy, unclassifiable song craft as part of the Bristol-based quartet Rae, a series of limited edition solo CDs, and a just-released, ecstatically received album ‘Collaborations Volume 1’, recorded in nine different locations and featuring thirty four guest musicians. Artists featured include Riognach Connolly (The Breath/ Honeyfeet), Brooke Sharkey, Liam Magill (Syd Arthur), Low Chimes and Adam Beattie. She will be playing as a trio for tonight’s performance.
“Like nothing else I’ve ever heard in my life, I was just blown away by her”
Cerys Matthews, BBC Radio 6

A rising star on the London alt-folk scene, American singer-songwriter Robert Chaney counts Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams and Judee Sill as influences. A remarkable songwriter with a voice to send shivers down your spine, sown deep into his songs are threads of the dusty blues of the 20s and 30s, pulp noir tales of the 40s, the cable-knit folk revival of the 50s, and the French celluloid new wave of the 60s. His recently released debut album ‘Cracked Picture Frames’ garnered high praise in the music press, with Folk Radio UK making it their featured album of the month.

Brighton-based visual artist and singer-songwriter JINWOO’s critically-acclaimed debut ‘Your Baby’ E.P. resulted in his being named one of The Independent’s ‘Faces to Watch 2015’. His long-awaited debut album ‘Strangers Bring Me No Light.’ was released on the much respected Cargo label in 2016. The album features collaborations with Malcolm Middleton, Alasdair Roberts, Kami Thompson (The Rails) and Kylie La Grange. His sparse atmospheric folk-soundscapes, laced with ghostly string arrangements and his exceptional acoustic guitar work, offer a kind of ‘spooked’ ‘gothic’ folk that sounds like no other. ‘Strangers Bring Me No Light’ is nothing short of a seminal record and Jinnwoo a true original.
“Jinnwoo is the most singular new folk talent in some time” The Independent 4/5
“Jinnwoo’s gothic folk-croak is a confessional reel unspooling from his innards, a tale of circling doom” The Guardian
TOBIAS BEN JACOB

Scottish singer-songwriter Samantha Whates is a hugely respected artist on the London roots scene. Her beautifully crafted, poetic songs retain a strong affinity with her Scottish roots, cultivating a sound that is thoroughly contemporary, rooted in tradition, yet uniquely her own. She recently formed the duo Picapica with her long time friend and collaborator Josienne Clarke, winner of the prestigious Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015. Recent performances include Kings Place and the Purcell Rooms in the Royal Festival Hall. She recently released her debut ‘Dark Nights Make For Brighter Days’ which has been enjoying both critical acclaim and radio play (BBC 6 Music, KCRW, Resonance FM). Scottish singer songwriter Adam Beattie released his fourth studio album ‘The Road Not Taken’ in 2016 with a sell-out show at Hoxton Hall in London and a UK-wide tour. Like the lost love-child of Tom Waits and Chet Baker, Beattie’s minor ballads and moody blues with a dark twist draw upon the broad influences of Celtic folk, American blues, country and early jazz balladry, his immaculate melodies combining with a poet’s ear for observation to tackle themes of life, love, death and hope. In December 2016 he was invited by long time fan Mark Rylance to perform at a Stop The War Coalition evening alongside Jeremy Corbyn and Brian Eno.

“Carefully crafted…affecting songwriting with a dark twist”
Roddy Hart, BBC RADIO SCOTLAND

To describe Whiskey Moonface as an alternative folk group doesn’t even begin to do justice to the breadth of inspiration and style in their music. Based around double bass, accordian, and clarinet, they’re led by the superb vocals and hallucinatory lyrics of singer Louisa Jones. Capable of being both ear-to-ear-grinningly entertaining and profoundly moving, they combine elements of Eastern European traditional & klezmer music, old-time New Orleans jazz and the baroque/ chamber folk styles of Sufjan Stevens and Beirut with their own unique take on contemporary folk music to make for a superbly realised, truly beautiful, and utterly original sound. There is simply no-one in the UK making music like Whiskey Moonface.

FOLK AND HONEY
Folk and Honey is the UK’s leading folk gig listing website. It was created by venue owner/musician Paul Michelmore and web expert Tobias Hussey as a response to the neglect shown in the mainstream media towards the vibrant UK folk music scene. Folk and Honey’s mission is both to help audiences find genuine, quality gigs and to assist musicians, venues and promoters in making a professional living from the music they love.
With thousands of concerts, artists, venues and promoters details, photos and videos listed on their site Folk and Honey has quickly become a well respected heavy weight in the UK music scene. It tops Google for most Folk Gig searches and its posts are viewed on Twitter over 2 million times a year.
Now Folk and Honey is launching this new label project to select the finest emerging acts and give them the public recognition they deserve. This will be an annual production, each year focussing on a different sub-genre of the UK folk scene, each year curated by a different expert.
New Roots began in 2015 as a way to bring focus to a growing alternative folk scene that was emerging in London and Bristol, and spreading to the rest of the UK. Run by Rory Carlile, the promotions company was built on the experience of a career in music production through the the ’90s with electronic label Wall of Sound, the first decade of the noughties with Big Life management and publishing, and a major part in the establishment of the renowned roots venue The Gladstone in London SE1 between 2009-2015. New Roots recognises a gap between the folk and indie world, an alt-folk terrain that is now ready to cross over.
Folk and Honey and New Roots are donating their time to this project for free, and all profit from ‘Sonic Blooms’ will be spent on further promotion for release and all the acts involved.
